The Chicago Cubs got a late home run from Willson Contreras to tie the game, and then some heads up baserunning from Javier Baez to take the late lead in beating the Padres on Monday night.
The Chicago Cubs tried a leadoff single, double and triple–and still couldn’t score. So they went with the trusty home run to make sure they got on the board. Willson Contreras hit a solo home run in the seventh–on the anniversary of his MLB debut—to tie the game up at 2-2. With Javier Baez on after a single, Albert Almora dropped one into left field for a hit. Baez, who was running on the pitch read the ball well and scored all the way from first for the winning tally.
Wade Davis came in and got the save, although it wasn’t the smoothest he’s had. And Padres manager Andy Green wasn’t too happy with Anthony Rizzo‘s collision with his catcher that knocked him from the game. Joe Maddon, on the other hand, saw nothing wrong with the play. We’ll see if any of that spills over into today’s game.
When the Cubs traded Gleyber Torres as part of the Aroldis Chapman deal last year, they knew they were parting with a top-tier player. Just as it looked like he would be making his way up to the Yankees, the 20-year old got some bad news. Torres suffered a torn UCL in his non-throwing hand and will have to have Tommy John surgery. He’ll miss the rest of the 2017 season, but should be ready by Spring Training.
