With Addison Russell struggling on and off the field, Javier Baez must take advantage of the opportunity at hand. Both for his sake and that of the Chicago Cubs.
On Wednesday, the Addison Russell story broke via a post on social media. The Chicago Cubs infielder learned that he was facing very serious accusations of abusing and physically harming his wife.
In a now-deleted Instagram post by Melisa Russell, she hinted at having moved on from her husband. Meanwhile, her friend alleged Russell physically abused her in front of their kids.
Russell missed two-straight games following the incident, which Joe Maddon said was to give the shortstop time to focus on the matter. He did, however, return to the team Friday and was available off the bench. He started in Saturday’s loss to Colorado, as well.
Depending on the results of the league investigation, Russell could face a lengthy suspension. We’ve already seen there doesn’t need to be charges filed for Major League Baseball to take action.
Chicago Cubs
Mets closer Jeurys Familia got 15 games for a similar offense, so it’s a certainty Russell will miss games if he’s found guilty of the alleged crime.
If that happens then Báez will be presented with an opportunity to seize more playing time and, perhaps, secure the starting gig once Russell returns.
Great in a limited role
A natural shortsop, Báez started at the position in both of the games since Russell’s been out. He’s enjoying a great season thus far, with a .225 ISO and nine homers. With 27 RBI, he’s driving in runs while hitting low in the order. So, all around, he’s been an essential member of the offense.
Báez served as a utility player throughout his time as a big leaguer, playing wherever he’s needed. Perhaps a secured spot for a few weeks will get him comfortable and on the way to a hot streak? Some players play better when they don’t have to worry if they’re playing or not or what position they’re playing.
Russell’s struggles this season have been disappointing. If the young shortstop does indeed get suspended, then perhaps time away can help him come back better than ever. But by the time he gets back the damage might already be done and his starting spot will be gone for the remainder of the season.

Whatever’s going on with Russell. it needs to be handled away from the game. If that means an extended period of time off, then so be it. Due to this unique circumstance, Báez could launch himself into the everyday role many thought he would be in when he was drafted.
