The Chicago Cubs have been waiting for Anthony Rizzo to get hot. He did. Rizzo paced the Cubs with two home runs as they held on to beat the Giants 5-4 on Wednesday.
The Chicago Cubs did things a little differently on Wednesday night. With no Ben Zobrist or Kyle Schwarber in the lineup, it was Javier Baez in the leadoff spot. That worked out just fine as he was part of two runs scoring while Anthony Rizzo did the heavy lifting. Rizzo’s two home runs were more than enough for Kyle Hendricks who picked up the win seven solid innings. Wade Davis did allow his first earned runs on the season on a home run to Mac Williamson but still held on to get the save.
The Cubs defense was a cornerstone of their success last season but had been missing so far. In the past week, it’s starting to show up in grand fashion. Plays by Addison Russell and Albert Almora are just a few of the spectacular plays that have sparked the Cubs defense and help put together this string of solid play.
It sounds like a broken record, but even with the Cubs dipping into their farm system again, there’s still some players on the farm who are getting the job done. With Ian Happ getting the call as well as Jeimer Candelario earlier this month, the Cubs are still deep in the minors, and it almost seems unfair.
