With the wind blowing out, the Chicago Cubs took early advantage of a day that was going to favor the hitters. But it was an advantage they couldn’t hold as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Andrew McCutchen rallied them twice from four runs down to win 8-7.

It was a day as a pitcher that you always hear about, especially when you play for the Chicago Cubs. You look out at the flags and see them blowing out like they were yesterday? You know your ERA is going to make a jump. It was the Cubs who took advantage early as Kris Bryant hit a bomb off the left field scoreboard for his first of the year. The Cubs would hold leads of 4-0 and 6-2, but the Pirates and Andrew McCutchen would have the final say as his three-run home run was the difference in the 8-7 win.

With the questions surrounding the Cubs and the center field position, defense hasn’t been a concern. Albert Almora started the season with a highlight reel robbing of Matt Adams in St. Louis and he hasn’t stopped making plays like that since. With an outfield of him and Jason Heyward, the Cubs defense continues to be a critical part of the success.

Being a writer about the Chicago Cubs has its ups and downs. When things are good, and you can write on positive things, the fans love you. But when it isn’t going well, and you have to start looking at why this guy isn’t hitting. Or why this pitcher is giving up so many hits? You can become quite hated by Cubs Nation. But even with all of that, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re part of that, and good or bad, this is what we love to do.
