I’ll admit, the Chicago Cubs offense had me a little worried as well. But after an 11 run output–no coming from the long ball–the Cubs look to be getting back on track to what we expect. And the Kris Bryant slump? That seems to be over as well.
Out of the gate, things didn’t look too good for the Chicago Cubs and starter Kyle Hendricks. A home run and several well-struck balls lead to a two-run inning in the first. But Hendricks settled in, and the offense took it from there. Three Cubs’ hitters notched a three-hit night, and that included Kris Bryant. After a slow start that saw him tally just one hit–and infield single yesterday–Bryant broke out on Saturday. The Cubs scored 11 runs after scoring just12 in their first four games.
Speaking of Bryant, it was one of the worst starts by a defending MVP to start a season. 0-for-14. It wasn’t pretty. Oddly enough, the previous MVP to struggle out of the gate like this? The Cubs very own Ryne Sandberg. Hmm, must be a Chicago thing. The same way that the first four didn’t indicate a pattern, neither does the one. But it’s a good sign to see Bryant–and the rest of the Cubs offense–doing what they do best.
The Brewers are at the bottom of the division now, but like the Cubs once were–it’s only a matter of time. Outside of Ryan Braun, the Brewers are a very young team. But it’s one that in the next few years is bound to get better. The Cubs model for success worked, and we know that imitation is the best form of flattery.
