It was an odd sort of game for the Chicago Cubs. They seemed out of rhythm most of the game, and couldn’t find an answer for the Cardinals Carlos Martinez. But a late home run from Willson Contreras gave the Cubs hope until Randal Grichuk broke our hearts.

The entire night, it seemed like a game that the Chicago Cubs weren’t supposed to win. Jon Lester had to battle. The offense had no answers. The whole night seemed like it would be good for a “do over”. Yet somehow after a Willson Contreras three-run home run in the top of the ninth, the Cubs had a chance. Unfortunately, it was short-lived as Randal Grichuk singled over the head of Kyle Schwarber with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win on Opening Night.

The road to success for Jon Lester was also filled with hardships. But it’s the combination of the two that have helped him become the leader that he is. Winning a World Series as something special. But beating cancer meant even more to him. We take a look at the events that helped shape the man that is Jon Lester.

There are plenty of good rivalries in the game of baseball. Some fans would say the Yankees and Red Sox. Those out west likely feel it’s the Dodgers and Giants. But we Midwesterners know the truth. There is no greater rivalry than the Cubs and the Cardinals.
