The Chicago Cubs were in a tight game with the Arizona Diamondbacks until a wild eighth inning lifted them to a 6-0 victory. John Lackey‘s impressive outing continues to make the Cubs rotation the best in baseball.

The starting pitching continues to drive the Cubs, and a little bit of help never hurts. The Cubs downed the Diamondbacks 6-0 after an eighth inning that saw them score five runs with anAddison Russell
double being the biggest hit of the inning. That was more than enough in support of John Lackey and the bullpen, as Lackey went 6 2/3 of shutout ball and the bullpen finished it off.
There was a time that many believed that Ryne Sandberg was being groomed to take over the big league team. He had been successful in the Cubs minor league system, and there wasn’t a long-term solution any better than he. But the call never came, and Sandberg left to get his chance with the Philadelphia Phillies, a move that was unfruitful and lead to him resigning mid-season. Now Ryno is back with the Cubs as an ambassador, and things just feel right.
Steals of home happen often, but straight steals are rare. Padres’ Melvin Upton Jr. pulled off one of the more impressive ones in recent memory with a great jump, and a slide that was even more impressive–almost Javier Baez-like.
