The Chicago Cubs offense looked good against the Padres Opening Day starter Tyson Ross in an 11-1 victory.
The Chicago Cubs signed Jason Heyward to the biggest contract in team history, and some have speculated they might have overpaid. Heyward can’t hear those people and just goes out to play ball, even when it’s just spring games. Heyward drove in three runs with two RBI doubles as the Cubs chased Tyson Ross even earlier than anticipated.
Clayton Richard made his first Cactus league start after making a few appearances out of the bullpen and pitched well again walking two and allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Cubs prospect Jeimer Candelario collected two more hit as he continues to have an impressive camp. The 22-year-old third baseman is batting .357 in 28 at-bats this spring.
Cubs’ starter Jon Lester knows he has a problem. He’s admitted that and now just needs to find a way to breakthrough. Lester has addressed “the yips” head on, and continues to work on his pickoff moves as well as throwing to bases. Lester admitted he wasn’t that good at it in high school, and the issue has always been there. It’s surprising that it’s taken this long to become an issue.
The Chicago White Sox Adam LaRoche is apparently stepping away from the game unexpectedly as he informed the Sox of his decision on Sunday. After a terrible 2015, it’s a possibility knee issues and back issues could have attributed to it. LaRoche told the team he would “sleep on it”, but many anticipate him retiring. LaRoche will leave $13 million if he walks away.
