Morning Marquee: Chicago Cubs late rally falls short in 3-2 loss to Cincinnati Reds

Arrieta’s one bad inning enough in loss to Reds

The Chicago Cubs

Jake Arrieta

pitched a game good enough to win. Unfortunately

Anthony DeSclafani

was even better, as is the case when the Cubs face a pitcher for the first time. One bad inning led to the downfall of Arrieta, as he allowed three runs on five hits in the fourth–while only allowing two hits the rest of the game.

But the Cubs got their chance when the Reds went to their pen, which outside of Aroldis Chapman has been downright horrendous. Welington Castillo hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to get the Cubs within one, and in the ninth they had their chance against Chapman. With the tying run on second, Mike Olt struck out to end the game. One thing is for sure, this team never believes they’re out of the game.

Even with the rough outing, Arrieta continues to be a driving force in the Cubs rotation. While off his “A game”, he missed a quality start by one out. So what has made him so dominant with the Cubs? Our Jacob Misener took a look at the numbers to see why.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Civil Rights Game, a game for those who battled for equality–and it will take place as Jackie Robinson Day will be celebrated across the league everywhere. Jack Roosevelt Robinson died of a heart attack at the age of 53 on Oct. 24, 1972. The day created in his honor is a time to remember his fight and to appreciate what it means today.
