Morning Marquee: Cubs go back-to-back-to-back in loss to Indians

The Chicago Cubs again failed to get their first win of the spring, falling to the Cleveland Indians 10-6. But it wasn’t without some excitement, as Jorge Soler, Javier Baez and Kris Bryant all homered consecutively to excite the fans’ hopes for the future. All three were no-doubters that left the yard of the Indians’ Trevor Bauer. Travis Wood‘s day wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either. The Cubs defense didn’t help him any, committing two errors in the outfield.

The battle for the final rotation spot may have thinned out a bit with the news Jacob Turner could start the season on the DL. The right-hander was diagnosed with a flexor strain and a bone bruise in his elbow on Tuesday. Turner had hoped to win the final spot, but that effort is on hold for the time being.

Cubs’ prospect Kris Bryant says that while the fans are excited about the 2015 team, no one is more excited than the team itself. even without a win this spring, that isn’t dampening the hopes of the fans or the players. Spring Training records often factor little into the overall assessment of a team. So the Cubs’ will continue to be charged up about this year, and the fans will as well.

In Central news, the Pirates Brandon Cumpton underwent Tommy John surgery, and will miss the entire 2015 season. Cumpton figured to be added depth for the Bucs this season. Last season he spent time as a starter and a reliever, with one of his best starts coming against the Cubs. He threw seven scoreless frame against them in a June 22 victory.
