The Chicago Cubs made some small moves on Tuesday, claiming Mike Kickham off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, and waived Ryan Lavarnway and Shane Peterson. Kickham has made 14 appearances for the Giants over the past two seasons, and his numbers haven’t been all that good. He’s allowed 54 hits inn 30 1/3 innings, posting a 10.98 ERA. Lavarnway spent an entire four days with the Cubs after being claimed off waivers on December 14. Peterson’s stint with the team wasn’t much longer. The moves leave one open spot on the 40-man roster for the Cubs, possibly indicating another move is coming.
The Cubs have reportedly signed free agent outfielder Adron Chambers. Chambers has spent some time in the Majors with St. Louis in 2011 and 2013, but spent last year in Triple-A between the Blue Jays and Astros systems. The deal reportedly contains an invite to Spring Training, although it will take a solid performance for Chambers to break camp with the Cubs with a full group of outfielders already.
The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a two-year, $8.25 million deal for right-hander Jason Grilli. The Braves have been looking to stockpile veteran arms, as the signings of Grilli and Jim Johnson have showed. Grilli, who resurrected his career in 2011 with the Pirates, was traded to the Angels last season after a slow start. In 40 appearances with the Angels, he posted a 3.87 ERA and seemed to have overcome his issues from earlier in the season.
