Padres new GM A.J. Preller is making a name for himself in his first-year. What that is won’t be determined till the season starts, but it won’t be for the lack of effort. The Padres acquired Wil Myers in a three-team, 11-player trade with the Nationals and the Rays. They also get catcher Ryan Hanigan. The addition of Myers with Matt Kemp, once the deal is finalized pending physical, gives the inept offense from last year a huge shot in the arm.
The Chicago Cubs roster saw some more changes to it on Wednesday. The Cubs sent OF Justin Ruggiano to the Seattle Mariners for RHP prospect Matt Brazis. The move helps to clean up an outfield that was a bit full, and Ruggiano was simply a casualty of that. He batted .281 with six home runs and 28 RBIs, But with the arrival of Jorge Soler and Arismendy Alcantara last season, and the strong showing by Chris Coghlan there weren’t going to many at-bats to go around.
Brazis split time between Single-A and Double-A, posting a 2.36 ERA in 40 appearances. In 72 1/2 innings, he struck out 84 while only walking 18. The Cubs may have scored a solid option for the bullpen if the right-hander continues to progress as he has.
The Kansas City Royals agreed on a two-year, $20 million deal with former Pirates starter Edinson Volquez. With the likely loss of James Shields, Volquez can set in to help fill that void. The Royals also added Alex Rios and Kendrys Morales this winter, and have likely finished most of their more notable signings.
