The Chicago Cubs are still looking to sign a top free agent this off-season after missing out on the first. Shortly after being considered a “clear” front-runner for Russell Martin, he signed a five-year, $82 million deal with the Blue Jays. They met with Jon Lester on Tuesday, and will likely meet with others in the coming weeks. The fans are chomping at the bit for the Cubs to sign someone, anyone on that “top” list. But it won’t mean this winter is a loss if they don’t.
Former KC Royals first baseman Billy Butler has signed a three-year, $30 million with the Oakland Athletics, per sources. The Royals turned down the $12 million option, allowing Butler to test free agency for the first time in his career. Butler will likely see time as a DH, as well as time at first base.
The New York Mets will put a “soft cap” on Matt Harvey‘s innings next season as he returns from Tommy John surgery. The plan is to cap innings to allow him to pitch into September and October. The plan is in stark contrast to what the Nationals did, shutting down Stephen Strasburg early before losing in the NLDS without one of their top pitchers.
