Morning Marquee: Dodgers’ Kershaw, Indians’ Kluber named Cy Young winners

The Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw took home the NL Cy Young award for the third time in his career on Wednesday. He was a unanimous selection, and why shouldn’t he be. Kershaw posted a 21-3 record, a 1.77 ERA, had a WHIP of 0.86 and threw a no-hitter. It was his second consecutive, and his third in four years. At 26, he is the youngest pitcher to claim three Cy Young Awards. The Reds Johnny Cueto was second, the Cards Adam Wainwright finished third.

The AL Cy Young wasn’t as clear-cut, and the final vote was close. But the Cleveland Indians Corey Kluber won his first, after never receiving a vote prior to this season. Kluber edged out Seattle’s Felix Hernandez 169-159 for the final tally between first and second place. The White Sox Chris sale was third. Kluber posted an 18-9 record, with a 2.44 ERA, and a WHIP of 1.10.

The Detroit Tigers are keeping Victor Martinez in the Motor City, agreeing to a four-year deal with their free agent. The deal is reported to be $70 million, with an annual salary of $17 million. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said that re-signing Martinez was his top priority this off-season. Martinez hit .335, with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2014. Coupled with Miguel Cabrera, they are one of the most dangerous duo’s in all of baseball.

The Chicago Cubs Jake Arrieta finished ninth in the Cy Young vote, receiving three fifth-place votes. Arrieta, who missed the first month of the season, went 10-5, with a 2.53 ERA. For the time being, he has established himself as the ace of a very young staff. That could change with all the rumors swirling of big name arms the Cubs could sign, but he will be a key piece nonetheless.
