Cubs’ general manager Jed Hoyer made it clear that this front office would be looking to add some veteran leadership “whether that’s one person or 3-4 people.” – this is where Russell Martin comes into the picture.
According to CBS Chicago’s very own Bruce Levin, the Chicago Cubs have already met with Martin’s representatives and have “rolled out the red carpet” for those involved. Just because the team is looking to add a guy like Martin doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re giving up on primary catcher Welington Castillo.

Adding Martin would definitely benefit the young catcher whose offensive production dropped during the 2014 campaign. These two working together could improve Castillo’s mechanics from top to bottom, giving him that extra boost that he needs.
In his final season with the Bucs, Martin slugged 11 home runs, 67 RBIs, 20 doubles, 110 hits while drawing 59 walks, and only striking out 78 times with a solid .290/.402/.430 in 379 at-bats. His on base percentage just so happens to be a career high for the veteran catcher.
Not only has Martin seen playing time behind the dish, but he’s started a handful of games at third base in his career. In nine Major League seasons, the 31-year-old had 18 appearances and 10 starts at the position with the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and the Pirates.
Now we all have to understand that Chicago isn’t the only team interested in this mans services. According to Levine, teams such as the Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Toronto Blue Jays are interested in bringing him on board.
There was no doubt that the Pirates wanted him back considering he was one of the fan favorites. A move to the Toronto Blue Jays would surely be interesting but not shocking considering how deep this team is when it comes to power. And the fact that they are indeed post-season ready just like the Dodgers.
If Hoyer and company are serious about adding a veteran guy to this team, than Russell Martin should be at the top of their list. They have money to spend, so don’t be surprised if these two sides meet up again within the next month or so.
