Pregame Notes: Jacob Turner to make first Cubs start

Tonight will be a game of firsts for several members of the Chicago Cubs.

Right-hander Jacob Turner (4-7, 5.77 ERA) will make his first start as a member of the Cubs and outfield prospect Jorge Soler, who was promoted yesterday, will make his big league debut, batting fifth in manager Ricky Renteria’s lineup against the Cincinnati Reds as the club eyes its fifth-straight win.

More from Chicago Cubs News

Soler was signed to a nine-year, $30 million deal back in 2012 and has not disappointed. This season, he is hitting .340/.432/.700 with 15 homers and 57 RBIs, spent largely split between Double-A and Triple-A. He joins Javier Baez at Chicago, looking to bring excitement and offensive production to Chicago over the rest of the season.

Turner, who was acquired from the Miami Marlins on Aug. 8, has made two relief appearances for the Cubs this season. He has made two career starts against Cincinnati as a member of the Marlins, going 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA. Cincinnati will send veteran right-hander Mat Latos (4-3, 2.99 ERA) to the hill. He will look to extend a career-long dominance of the Cubs. In his career, Latos is 6-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 10 starts against Chicago.

Chicago first baseman Anthony Rizzo is not in the lineup tonight after being removed from Tuesday’s win with a back injury.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast on CSN Chicago and WGN-AM 720 will carry the radio call.
