Chicago Cubs No. 1 prospect Kris Bryant suffers toe injury

Chicago Cubs top prospect Kris Bryant left Triple-A Iowa’s game against Salt Lake after two innings due to an injury to his left big toe.

Bryant made a running, over the shoulder, basket grab in foul territory before he exited under his own power with a trainer. X-rays taken at a local hospital in Des Moines were inconclusive, and Bryant will undergo an MRI Sunday morning.

Bryant was selected second overall in the 2013 draft and has hit a minor league leading 40 home runs and driven in 103 runs while hitting .333 in 124 games between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Bryant drew a walk in the first and was later forced out at second base.

The Cubs are not expected to promote Bryant in September and hoped he would finish out the year in Iowa.
