Travis Wood will take the mound for the Chicago Cubs in the three-game series opener against the New York Mets on the road at 6:10 p.m. CT on WGN.
Wood (7-9, 4.86) is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five career starts against the Mets. However, he is 0-4 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 starts since June 15 and his 6.11 road ERA is the highest in baseball.
In his last start on Sunday, he broke his overall losing streak by allowing one unearned run and four hits in six innings for a 3-2 Cubs win in 12 innings over Tampa Bay.
The Mets will counter with Zack Wheeler (7-8, 3.53), who is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in last last eight starts. The right-hander also has gone at least six innings in each of those starts.
Wheeler left in the six with a three-run lead in his last outing, but the bullpen gave up four runs over three innings for a 7-6 loss. He gave up only three hits but walked three.
Wheeler held the Cubs to just two hits and struck out seven over 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his only career start in a 2-1 loss on June 3. Three of those strikeouts were against Anthony Rizzo, who is a career .358 hitter against the Mets, going 9 for 23 in six games at Citi Field.
