Kyle Hendricks guides Chicago Cubs to 3-0 win
Rookie Kyle Hendricks pitched 7 1/3 innings of six-hit hall in his third consecutive win, and the Chicago Cubs took away a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Hendricks (4-1) struck out five and walked one in his third consecutive win. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he earned a no-decision in his major league debut at Cincinnati on July 10.
Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th home run for the Cubs and Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run to break out of a 1-for-14 slump in the first four games of the seven-game home stand.
Brewers’ starter Wily Peralta (14-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. It was his second loss against an NL Central opponent this season, he is 6-0 with a 1.10 ERA in seven games against the rest of the division.
Milwaukee center field Carlos Gomez made a leaping grab on the warning track in the first, robbing extra bases from Javier Baez. Gomez then was hit by a pitch from Hendricks on his right wrist in the third, but stayed in the game.
Justin Ruggiano‘s RBI single in the second, and Alcantara another run with a single in the fourth. Alcantara’s single drove in Starlin Castro, who doubled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Rizzo then crushed a lead off homer in the sixth.
Pedro Strop entered with the bases loaded in the eighth and got Jonathan Lucroy to ground into an inning-ending double play. Hector Rondon pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save this season.
Brewers right-hander Kyle Lohse (11-6, 3.33) and Cubs left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada (1-1, 3.25) are schedule to start in the third game of the series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. CT.
