Down on the Farm: Addison Russell collects 2 hits, Felix Peña dominates

Addison Russell collected two hits and Felix Peña guided Double-A Tennessee Smokies to a win while Paul Blackburn was also strong on the mound for Kane County in the Chicago Cubs minor league action Wednesdsay.

Tennessee 5, Mobile Bay Bears (Diamondbacks) 0

Russell, Pin-Chieh Chen, and Lars Anderson hit RBI doubles and Christian Villanueva added a two-run single behind Pena’s strong start for a 5-0 shutout win.

Pena allowed just three hits, struck out eight and walked only two over 5 1/3 innings.

Russell was 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored, Chen was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, and Villanueva was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Daytona Cubs
Clearwater Threshers (Phillies) 4, Daytona 0

Juan Paniagua allowed two home runs in the first four innings to take the loss. Paniagua allowed four runs on three hits, striking out six and walking three.

The Cubs were hitless until Billy McKinney singled with one out in the eighth. McKinney was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Kane County Cougars
Kane County 4, Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals) 2

Blackburn allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked only one for the win. Tyler Bremer pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

Jeimer Candelario was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Jeffrey Baez was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
