Pregame Notes: Edwin Jackson starts as Cubs go for series win vs Padres

Edwin Jackson takes the mound for the Chicago Cubs in the season series finale against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. CT on WGN.

Jackson has lost five of his last six decision and allowed 124 hits and 69 earned runs while striking out 100 over 110 2/3 innings for a 5-10 record and a 5.61 ERA this season. Back up catcher John Baker will call the pitches for Jackson, who is batting .214 with 10 RBIs in 135 at-bats this season.

Padres’ starter Tyson Ross has lost five of his last seven starts and has allowed 114 hits and 41 earned runs while striking out 132 over 136 2/3 innings for an 8-10 record and a 2.70 ERA.

The Cubs are 1-6 in their last seven games and 1-10 in Jackson’s last 11 starts against the NL West. San Diego is 4-7 in their last 11, 2-6 in their last eight road games, and 2-7 Ross’ last nine starts. The Padres are also 3-6 in their last nine at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have completed season series against the Braves, Marlins, Phillies, Nationals, and Diamondbacks with their lone series victory over the Marlins, 4-2. They can win the season series against the Padres with a win tonight. A win would also be the first series win since June 6-8 when the Cubs topped the Marlins.
