The Chicago Cubs have signed Dominican left-hander Wander Cabrera and shortstop Yeiler Peguero for $250,000, reports Baseball America.
Cabrera, 16, is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound with strong arm strength. BA indicates will need to develop his delivery and strike-throwing ability, but at 16 shows promise. He has also trained with Amauris Nina the same trainer as the Cubs’ top international signee Eloy Jimenez, who signed for $2.8 million last season. The contract also includes a $50,000 college scholarship, which will not count against the Cubs’ bonus pool, according to BA.
Peguero, also 16, is a smaller prospect at 5-foot-10 at 155-pounds. BA notes that he has an average arm and a switch-hitter with a line-drive approach at the plate.
The two will develop in the Dominican Republic at the Cubs’ facility and possibly in 2016 play in the United States.
