Coming off an extra-inning win that saw Travis Wood get a key pinch-hit RBI for the Chicago Cubs (29-39), Manager Rick Renteria may have to try to get him in the game somewhere tonight against the Miami Marlins (35-34). Wood has helped key the last two victories, and the Cubs seem to need the offensive help when Samardzija takes the mound.
Jeff Samardzija (2-6, 2.77) will take the hill for the Cubs. He comes off an outing in which he allowed a season-high nine hits, but the Cubs were also shut out for the fifth time in his 14 starts. Trade rumors continue to swirl around Samardzija, but he will look to focus on the task at hand. The Marlins will send Anthony DeSclafini (1-1, 5.56) for his third career start. This will be his second stint as he was recently recalled when Jacob Turner was moved to the bullpen and veteran Randy Wolf was designated for assignment.
Luis Valbuena, who is as locked in as any Cubs hitter right now–since June 5, he’s batting .372 (16-for-43), one HR, five 2B, five RBI–will again fill in at the leadoff spot for the injured Emilio Bonifacio.
The game will be carried on WGN TV, and broadcast on WGN 720 AM, with a start time of 6:10 pm CT. Here are tonight’s starting lineups:
