Dustin Geiger hit his seventh home run this season for Tennessee, Daytona was no-hit until the seventh then went on to win, and Kane County won in extras as the Chicago Cubs affiliates complete a sweep.
Iowa Cubs
Iowa had an off-day and will open a three-game series homestand against the Colorado Sky Sox (Rockies) Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
Tennessee Smokies
Final: Tennessee 4, Birmingham (White Sox) 1
Dustin Geiger hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to lift the Smokies to a 4-1 win over Birmingham. It was his seventh homer this season, he went 1-for-3 with a walk in the game.
Joe Gardner earned his first win in the Cubs organization. Gardner allowed just one run on three hits, striking out five and walking none over 6 2/3 innings.
Anthony Giansanti doubled in Charles Cutler for some insurance in the eighth. Arodys Vizcaino picked up the save after a perfect ninth.
Left fielder John Andreoli went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Andreoli has 28 stolen bases in 56 games this season.
Daytona Cubs
Final: Daytona 4, Jupiter Hammerheads (Marlins) 2
Willson Contreras singled to right field to break up Jupiter’s no-hitter in the seventh before Gioskar Amaya drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Marco Hernandez doubled in two runs for the 4-2 win.
Zeke DeVoss added a sacrifice fly for Daytona’s fourth run on three hits and a walk.
Daytona’s starter Rob Zastryzny allowed two runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one over five innings. Jose Rosario (3-4) allowed just two hits, striking out five and hitting two batters over three scoreless innings for the win.
Andrew McKirahan struck out two and earned his fifth save this season in the ninth.
Kane County Cougars
Final: Kane County 5, Clinton Lumberkings (Mariners) 4
Jacob Hannemann doubled to lead off the tenth and went to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the winning run on Yasiel Balaguert‘s fielder’s choice for the 5-4 walk-off win.
Paul Blackburn allowed two runs on one hit and walked three over just two-thirds of an inning. James Pugliese entered in relief and allowed two runs on five hits, including a solo home run, striking out six and walking none over 3 1/3 innings.
Corbin Hoffner struck out six of the nine batters he faced and Tyler Bremer improved to 5-0 while allowing just one hit, striking out two and walking one over the final three innings.
Hannemann went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Lockhart was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Jacob Rogers was 2-for-4 and a run scored.
