Down on the Farm: Trey Martin grand slam, Smokies lose on walk-off walk

Trey Martin hit a grand slam to lift the Cougars to a win while the Smokies loss on a walk-off walk and the Iowa Cubs were rained out.

Iowa Cubs Postponed
Iowa (27-21) will play a double header Wednesday against the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) at AutoZone Park.

Final: Huntsville Stars (Brewers) 2, Tennessee 1
Armando Rivero gave up a solo home run to tie it in the ninth and Austin Kirk walked in the winning run in the 11th inning as the Smokies fell 2-1 at Joe W. Davis Municipal Stadium.

The Smokies’ (26-25) lone run gave in the third when Dustin Geiger singled in Kris Bryant, who drew four walks in the game.

Jeudy Valdez and Wes Darvill singled with one-out before Corey Black‘s sacrifice bunt put them in scoring position before they were left stranded to end the second.

Corey Black doubled and John Andreoli walked to put two runners on. After a visit to the mound, Bryant drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Rafael Lopez flied out to right to end the potential rally.

Black allowed three hits while striking out six and walking four over 5 1/3 innings. Kirk (1-4) took the loss after giving up one hit and walking three in the 11th.

Lopez went 2-for-4 with a walk, Geiger 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Darvill 2-for-5.

Final: Daytona 8, Palm Beach Cardinals 4
Albert Almora singled and Dan Vogelbach tripled in the fifth to lift Daytona to a 8-4 comeback win at Jackie Robsinson Ballpark.

Almora put Daytona (20-29) on the board in the first with an RBI groundout to score Pin-Chieh Chen, who singled to start the game. Lance Rymei added an RBI double the next inning for a 2-0 Daytona lead after the second.

Daytona starter Tayler Scott gave up one run in the third and two in the fourth for Palm Beach to take their first lead of the game, 3-2.

Chen singled then advance to third on a fielding error that put two Daytona runners in scoring position. Almora’s two-run single gave Daytona the lead and Vogelbach’s triple to center made it 5-3.

Palm Beach scored in the seventh to make it a one-run game before Almora scored on a fielder’s choice and Gioskar Amaya doubled to add three more runs.

Scott (3-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking and striking out three over 5 2/3 innings.

Almora went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Amaya 1-for-4 with one run and two RBIs, Chen 2-for-4 with two runs, Vogelbach and Willson Contreras were 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI.

Final: Kane County 5, Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals) 4
Trey Martin hit a two-out grand slam to lift the Cougars to a 5-4 win at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Michael Wagner gave up a solo home run in the eighth and Tyler Bremer issued a bases-loaded walk in the ninth, but struck out the next two batters for the save.

Ben Carhart put the Cougars (35-17) on the board with a single to left for a 1-0 lead in the first.

Cougars’ starter Duane Underwood gave up a RBI double and single in the third and sixth to give Peoria a 2-1 lead before Martin’s grand slam.

Underwood allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking one over six innings. Wagner (1-1) took the win after he allowed one run on four hits with two strike outs and one walk.

Martin went 2-for-3 with one run and four RBIs on a grand slam and Jacob Hannemann 2-for-4 with one run.
