Cubs left-hander Travis Wood came within five outs of pitching his first career shutout before allowing Carlos Quentin‘s pinch-hit, two-run home run, and Chicago held on to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Saturday night.

Jason Hammel (5-2, 2.91 ERA) will take the mound for the Cubs and will be opposed by Padres’ Ian Kennedy (2-6, 3.79 ERA) as the Cubs look to split the four-game series.

Around the league: rookie George Springer hit two home runs for the Astros, Mat Latos has been cleared to begin rehabbing, the Red Sox dropped their ninth straight loss, Matt Cain will skip his start Monday and Yusmerio Petit will take his spot against the Cubs.
