5/23 Morning Marquee: Rizzo tops Padres, Sale dominate in DL return

Anthony Rizzo homered to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 win over the Padres in the first game of their 10-game road trip.

Top Cubs prospects Jorger Soler and Pierce Johnson will head to the disabled list, Soler with a hamstring injury and Johnson a calf injury. Kris Bryant as taken it upon himself to lead the injury battled Double-A Tennessee Smokies to victory while Javier Baez is working out of a recent slump.

Edwin Jackson (3-3, 3.98 ERA) will take the mound for the Cubs and will be opposed by Padres’ right-hander Tim Stauffer (1-0, 2.41 ERA) in Game 2.

Around the league: Chris Sale dominated in the Yankees in his return from the DL, the Dodgers released catcher Miguel Olivo following ear-biting incident at Triple-A Albuquerque, and Rangers’ first baseman Prince Fielder will have neck surgery that will likely end his season.
