Iowa 2 – Nashville 1 (F/10)
We’ll go ahead and start off with the Iowa Cubs who continued their series against the Nashville Sounds.
Shortstop Javier Baez came up to the plate during the bottom of the 10th inning after Matt Szczur and Logan Watkins were able to string together a couple hits with only one out. Baez drive the 3-2 pitch to center field to plate the winning run in walk-off fashion, finishing the night 1-for-5 with the game-winner and two strikeouts.
There was not much scoring throughout the game as the Cubs trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Lars Anderson came through with a much-needed game-tying solo home run to right field. It was Anderson’s second home run of the season which handed Donovan Hand a blown save. Anderson finished the game 1-3 with his lone hit being the aforementioned homer.
Iowa starting pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada put together another beautiful outing despite giving up a solo home during the top of the second. Wada worked through seven innings, giving up six hits and walking three, but striking out eight. He’s been able to sit down opposing hitters as he’s tallied 46 this season. Wada finished with a career-high 80 strikeouts last season.
The winning pitcher is Eduardo Figueroa (1-0, 1.86 ERA) and the losing pitcher is Donovan Hand (1-5, 3.69 ERA, 2 BS).
The Iowa Cubs improve to 20-15 on the year.
