Chicago Cubs prospect Kris Bryant continues to shine and was named the Southern League hitter of the week for May 4-11 on Monday.
Bryant, the Cubs’ first pick in the June 2013 draft, batted .464 with 12 runs, 13 hits, four home runs and 14 RBIs in seven games for Double-A Tennessee this past week.
Thus far this season, the 22-year-old slugger is batting .331 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs.
Also, left-handed pitcher Chris Rusin won Pacific Coast League pitcher of the week honors. The 27-year-old threw a no-hitter Wednesday against the New Orleans Zephyrs (Miami Marlins). Rusin struck out three and walked only two in the first no-hitter by a Iowa pitcher since Reggie Patterson in 1984.
Rusin has pitched in the majors once this year with five scoreless innings of three-hit relief against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 12. Over parts of three seasons with the Cubs, Rusin is 4-9 with a 4.53 ERA and was one of the final cuts in spring training this year.
