The Chicago Cubs have activated starter Jake Arrieta and called up outfielder Chris Coghlan after placing Ryan Sweeney on the disabled list, reports MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat.
Arrieta, 28, missed all of spring training after experiencing shoulder soreness this past winter. In five rehab starts in April for Singles and Double-A, he gave up 13 hits and walked seven with a 2.25 ERA over 20 innings.
Coghlan, 28, will replace Sweeney, who injured his hamstring after running down a fly ball on Friday afternoon. The National League Rookie of the Year in 2009 with then Florida Marlins and has batted .243/.379/.314 in 88 plate appearances for Iowa this season. In 2013 with the Miami Marlins, he hit .256/.318/.354 with one home run and 10 runs batted in, after appearing in just 70 games.
Rosscup, 25, is the odd-man out has the Cubs did not want to carry three lefthanders in the bullpen. He struck out two and walked one with out allowing a run over 2 2/3 innings this season for the Cubs.
Carlos Villanueva will move back to the bullpen with Arrieta being activated and could potentially be traded if he pitches well. Villanueva could see more time to make himself more desirable with left-hander James Russell not having pitched in 10 days.
