Down on the Farm: Iowa Cubs, Tennessee Smokies pick up victories

3 of 5

Taking the mound today for the Tennessee Smokies was top pitching prospect C.J. Edwards. Starting opposite of Edwards was right-hander Carlos Frias.

Chattanooga (Los Angeles Dodgers) would pick up the first run during the top of the fourth inning on a force out to second baseman Stephen Bruno by Scott Schebler. Darnell Sweeney could come across to score to make it a 1-0 ball game. Edwards would make it through 5 2/3 innings before he was pulled from the game and replaced by right-hander P.J. Francescon. C.J. gave up five hits, was charged with an earned run, walked four but struck out five.

His ERA on the year is a beautiful 0.93. Tennessee would receive a huge at-bat from catcher Rafael Lopez who shot an RBI double to right field, allowing Kris Bryant and Dustin Geiger to score making it a 2-1 ball game. Chattanooga first baseman O’Koyea Dickson would be charged with a throwing error during the same play, which allowed Lopez to come around to score to extend the lead to 3-1 during the bottom of the sixth.

That’s all the Smokies would need as right-handed closer Armando Rivero would come in to pick up the save.

Winning pitcher today for the Smokies is P.J. Francescon (2-0, 0.00 ERA), losing pitcher is Carlos Frias (0-1, 3.27 ERA) with the save going to Armando Rivero (2).

Final Score: Smokies 3, Lookouts 1.

Tennessee improves to 2-4.
