Down on the Farm: Iowa Cubs, Tennessee Smokies pick up victories

Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to another edition of Down on the Farm. Tonight the Iowa Cubs, Kane County Cougars, Tennessee Smokies and the Daytona Cubs squads took the field in hopes of a Chicago sweep at all levels.
The Iowa Cubs were back in action with the Nashville Sounds, a team who they were unable to rally against and fell 4-1. Kane County capped off the night with a walk-off win on a throwing error by the Fort Wayne TinCaps shortstop Franchy Cordero. Tennessee had the day off while the Daytona Cubs were postponed.
So with the big league Cubs picking up the victory tonight over the Pittsburgh Pirates, let’s see if the rest of the Minor League affiliates were able to do the same over their opponents.
Iowa had right-hander Carlos Pimentel take the mound against Johnny Hellweg and Sounds. Nashville (Milwaukee Brewers) were able to strike first after Pimentel was able to get through a scoreless first inning. Third baseman Tyler Green launched a two out solo home run to right field on the first pitch of the at-bat. Iowa would tie the game during the bottom half of the second on a single by starting pitcher Pimentel to right field, driving in Chris Coghlan making it a 1-1 game.
Iowa would make it a 2-1 ball game on a wild pitch by Hellweg with Josh Vitters in the batters box. Vitters would walk, but Arismendy Alcantara would score on the pitch that got away from Hellweg. Javier Baez advanced to third who would later come across to score off a sacrifice fly by Chris Coghlan to take a 3-1 lead. Outfielder Brett Jackson would extend the lead to 4-1 after launching a solo home run to right field, his first of the year.
Pimentel was pulled from the game after six complete innings of work. He was charged with one earned run off three hits, walked one but struck out 10.
Vitters would get another chance to put a ball in play after walking in his previous at-bat, as he took pitcher Alfredo Figaro deep for a two run home run. Javier Baez would come across to score yet again to make it a 6-1 game through seven.
Marcus Hatley would enter the game during the top of the ninth. He would only give up one hit, but struck out two batters.

Iowa improves to 3-4 on the year.
Taking the mound today for the Tennessee Smokies was top pitching prospect C.J. Edwards. Starting opposite of Edwards was right-hander Carlos Frias.
Chattanooga (Los Angeles Dodgers) would pick up the first run during the top of the fourth inning on a force out to second baseman Stephen Bruno by Scott Schebler. Darnell Sweeney could come across to score to make it a 1-0 ball game. Edwards would make it through 5 2/3 innings before he was pulled from the game and replaced by right-hander P.J. Francescon. C.J. gave up five hits, was charged with an earned run, walked four but struck out five.
His ERA on the year is a beautiful 0.93. Tennessee would receive a huge at-bat from catcher Rafael Lopez who shot an RBI double to right field, allowing Kris Bryant and Dustin Geiger to score making it a 2-1 ball game. Chattanooga first baseman O’Koyea Dickson would be charged with a throwing error during the same play, which allowed Lopez to come around to score to extend the lead to 3-1 during the bottom of the sixth.
That’s all the Smokies would need as right-handed closer Armando Rivero would come in to pick up the save.
Winning pitcher today for the Smokies is P.J. Francescon (2-0, 0.00 ERA), losing pitcher is Carlos Frias (0-1, 3.27 ERA) with the save going to Armando Rivero (2).

Tennessee improves to 2-4.
The Daytona Cubs played a double header today against the Dunedin Blue Jays (Toronto Blue Jays) after being postponed the other day. Dunedin picked up a 1-0 shutout against the Cubs early with the only run of the game coming during the top of the third. Dalton Pompey doubled on a line drive to right field, allowing Derrick Chung to come around and score.
Winning pitcher for game one would be Matt Boyd (2-0, 0.00 ERA), the loss was handed to Felix Pena (0-2, 1.50 ERA) while the save was picked up by Arik Sikula (2).
Final Score: Blue Jays 1, Cubs 0.
Daytona would put up a better fight during the second game of the double header. Dunedin put up a one spot during the top of the first off a sacrifice fly by K. C. Hobson to make it 1-0 early on. Daytona would respond with a run of their own during the bottom of the third courtesy of a Pin-Chieh Chen double to right field. Marco Hernandez would come across to score to make it a 1-1 ball game. Dwight Smith would ground out to shortstop Hernandez allowing Michael Reeves to help give a 2-1 lead back to the Blue Jays.
Dunedine would add another run during the top of the sixth thanks to Jorge Flores shooting a single to right field to make it 3-1. Shortly after, Dwight Smith would add two more by doubling to left field, making it 5-1. The Blue Jays weren’t done just yet as K.C. Hobson picked up his second RBI of the night off a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1 going into the bottom half of the inning.
Dan Vogelbach would launch a three run home run to left field, driving in Pin-Chieh Chen and Albert Amora, bringing the Daytona Cubs within two runs. There were unable to close the gap, allowing the Blue Jays to pick up a double-header sweep.
Winning pitcher for game two is Taylor Cole (1-0, 2.31 ERA), losing pitcher is Jose Rosario (0-1, 4.00 ERA) with the save going to Blake McFarland (1).
Final Score: Blue Jays 6, Cubs 4.
Daytona would drop to 1-4 on the year.
The Kane County Cougars are coming off a wild extra innings victory just last night against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Tonight was also go into extra innings, but would the Cougars have it in them again to walk away with the victory? Let’s find out.
Cougars catcher Ben Carhart would give his team the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field during the bottom of the first inning. TinCaps would take a one run lead after Jose Carlos Urena launched a two run home run to left field off Paul Blackburn during the top of the second inning. Cougars first baseman Jacob Rogers would even the score with a solo home run during the bottom of the second inning to right field, making it a 2-2 ball game through two innings.
Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth inning where the Kane County Cougars pick up a huge RBI single by Shawon Dunston to give them the 4-2 lead. TinCaps second baseman Fernando Perez would ground out to Rogers, which would allow Mallex Smith to come around to score to make it a 4-3 ball game during the top of the eighth inning. Fort Wayne catcher Dane Phillips would tie the ball game during the top of the ninth on a solo home run to right field. It was his first home run of the season.
And for the second day in a row, Kane County and Fort Wayne would enter extra innings. Quick look at the top of the 10th, Fernando Perez picked up another RBI on the night on a single to left field to make it 5-4 in extras. Phillips (who tied the ball game) would give the TinCaps a 7-4 lead after doubling to left field, allowing teammates Fernando Perez and Luis Tejada to score.
Kane County would be unable to pull out a win in extra innings tonight.
