The Chicago Cubs sent Javier Baez to the minor-leagues as one of seven roster cuts on Saturday to trim the roster to 37 and named Travis Wood the home opener starter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jeff Samardzija has been named the Opening Day starter.

In game action, the Cubs fell 8-3 to National League Central rival Cincinnati Reds while shortstop Starlin Castro knocked two hits in a minor league game.

Around the league, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks in Australia to get a head start on the regular season and the Milwaukee Brewers exercised a 2015 option for manager Ron Roenicke.
