The Chicago Cubs fell 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon to the Seattle Mariners. Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija threw 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball and Mike Olt debuted at third base.
The Cubs shipped minor league outfielder Trevor Gretzky to the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Matt Scioscia, the son of Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Gretzky is the son of Hall of Fame hockey player Wayne Gretzky.
Around the league, contract talks between Justin Masterson and the Cleveland Indians have fizzled, Aroldis Chapman likely out for only four to six weeks, the Baltimore Orioles sign right-hander reliever Luis Ayala, and Samardzija thinks the protective caps for pitchers look stupid.
