The Chicago Cubs split two games on Monday afternoon with a 6-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics and a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Cubs’ top prospect Javier Baez debuted at second base and James McDonald left after only two pitches with right shoulder soreness. The same shoulder caused McDonald to miss the final five months on the 2013 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Around the league, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers have arrived in Sydney for the opening series, A’s Jarrod Parker will undergo Tommy John surgery, and an umpire was struck by a line drive.
