On the Chicago Cubs’ first off day this spring on Thursday, the Arizona Diamondback sent right-hander Marcos Mateo, a Rule 5 pick, back to the Cubs.

Around the league, the Kansas City Royals signed 40-year-old Brett Tomko to minor league deal, the St. Louis Cardinals optioned outfielder Oscar Taveras to Triple A Memphis, and the MLB will return to Montreal for exhibition games.
