The Chicago Cubs did not wait until their off day on Thursday to make cut their roster down to 56 players on Wednesday.

Arismendy Alcantara, Logan Watkins, Jorge Soler, and Matt Szczur were optioned to the minor leagues. Alcantara, Watkins, and Szczur were optioned to Triple-A Iowa, while Soler was optioned to Double-A Tennesssee.

Kris Bryant, Albert Almora, Jeudy Valdez, Carlos Pimentel, and Eric Jokish were reassigned to minor-league camp, which begins Thursday. The assignments for those players will be announced at a later date.

The main difference between the ‘optioned’ and ‘reassigned’ players is the optioned players will remain on the 40-man roster while the reassigned players are not.

The Cubs also released outfielder Aaron Cunningham, 27, who was signed in November. The Cubs now have 56 players in their spring camp.
