It’s no mystery the Chicago Cubs are still in the rebuilding process. One piece of the puzzle that was a pleasant surprise last year was Nate Schierholtz. Schierholtz had a career year in his first season as an everyday player. His name swirled about at the trade deadline last year but nothing ever came of the chatter. He’s as penciled in as a starter that the Cubs have this spring, even with the outfield depth in camp.
Entering this season the Cubs brought in several players as non-roster invitees with hopes of someone standing out. Ryan Kalish is one of those players that the Cubs could keep for a fifth outfield spot. Now, with the news that the Detroit Tigers Andy Dirks could be out three months following back surgery, the Cubs surplus could be a help to the Tigers.
The Tigers need, coupled with the Cubs roster means the Cubs could garner a solid package in return for Schierholtz. The Tigers may choose to see how the spring plays out before making any moves, but it’s likely Nate Schierholtz will be one of the players on Detroit’s radar.
