Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly was hired by the Cubs as a front-office special assistant to president/general manager. Lilly will likely to work directly with young pitchers and join staff on amateur and pro scouting trips.

Around the league, the Texas Rangers are working to sign lefty Joe Saunders, Detroit Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks will miss three months after back surgery, and Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson has added a knuckball to his pitching arsenal.
