The Chicago Cubs announced their Minor League coaches and coordinators for 2014 with little change from the successful 2013 campaign.
Former Cubs’ pitcher Angel Guzman joins the organization as the pitching coach for the Venezuelan rookie affiliate while Mike Mason moves to Derek Johnson‘s assistant as the organization’s pitching coordinator after six years as Triple-A Iowa’s pitching coach.
Guzman was a top pitching prospect from 2006-09 whose career was derailed due to arm injuries. Former Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach from 2010-12, Bruce Walton will replace Mason and Brian Lawrence takes over as pitching coach for the Boise Hawks after spending last season in the same role at San Diego High-A affiliate Lake Elsinore.
In minor league manager assignments, Marty Peavy (Triple-A Iowa), Buddy Bailey (Double-A Tennessee), Dave Keller (Class-A Daytona), Mark Johnson (Class-A Kane County) and Gary Von Toi (Short-A Boise) all return.
There is also no movement among hitting coaches, Brian Harper (Iowa), Desi Wilson (Tennessee), Mariano Duncan (Daytona), Tom Beyers (Kane County). Leo Perez will join Wilson as an assistant, he previously served as a catching instructor.
Tim Cossins (field/catching), Anthony Iapoce (special assistant to the GM and player development, overseeing the hitting program) and Jose Flores (infield) join Johnson and Mason as minor league coordinators.
