REPORT: Chicago Cubs interviewing Brad Ausmus today

Brad Ausmus is interviewing for the Chicago Cubs’ manager job in Chicago, according to multiple sources.

Ausmus, 44, has never managed for a major league organization but is a highly touted candidate for multiple vacant managerial openings. He interviewed with the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Currently, Ausmus is a special assistant to baseball operations with the San Diego Padres, a position current Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer use to hold.

Ausmus marks the sixth known candidate to interview for the job – joining Manny Acta, A.J. Hinch, Dave Martinez, Rick Renteria, and Eric Wedge. The Cubs are reportedly interested in Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo but he has not been contacted yet.

Ausmus played for 18 seasons from 1993-2010 with four different teams and won three Gold Glove Awards (2001, 2002, 2006) as the Houston Astros catcher.

Last September, Ausmus managed the Isreal national baseball team to the Qualification Round for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. The team failed to qualify after falling to Spain in the Pool Finals.

Ausmus graduated from Dartmouth College while playing in the New York Yankees’ organization.
