Adding to the list of hopefuls for the Cubs managerial job next year, the powers that be interviewed Dave Martinez on Thursday. Martinez is the bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays, and has been for the past six years. He has also interviewed with Indians, Blue Jays, and Astros in the past.
Martinez was actually drafted by the Cubs, third overall, in the 1986 draft. He played his last game in 2001 for the Braves.
This will be the 4th person the Cubs have interviewed for the position, the others being the Padres’ Rick Renteria, A.J. Hinch, formerly of the Diamondbacks, and former manager and analyst Manny Acta.
Martinez is 49 and currently makes his home in Tampa Bay with his wife and four children.
