The Cubs managerial search goes on. Reports from ESPN’s Buster Olney and others have San Diego Padres Rick Renteria as the new frontrunner and have him meeting at Wrigley Field as soon as next week. Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez was thrown into the candidate pool after word that the Cubs would seek permission to talk to him. Former managers Manny Acta and A.J. Hinch are still in the running.
In the postseason, the Oakland A’s Moneyball run ended last night with a stellar pitching performance from A’s rookie Sonnie Gray and Tigers Justin Verlander. The Tigers now head to their third consecutive ALCS, where they will duel with the Boston Red Sox. Game One of the NLCS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT with Zack Greinke taking the mound against Joe Kelly and the Cards.
