Ryne Sandberg made his debut at the Friendly Confines on Friday – his managerial debut, that is. It really couldn’t have went better for the Hall of Fame second baseman.
His Phillies team rallied from down 5-0 in the fifth to score four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh before pushing in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth against Chicago closer Kevin Gregg, giving Ryno a win in his return to Wrigley.
“”It was good,” Sandberg said of the reception in his return. “I heard it. A little tip of the hat to the crowd for that. And once I got up there with the umpires, we chatted a little bit. I asked them if they wanted me to take them around the ground rules.”
Chicago (56-78) will look to bounce back against the Phillies (62-73), who are 7-3 in their last ten ball games. Left-hander Chris Rusin (2-3, 2.64 ERA) will square off against veteran southpaw Cliff Lee (11-6, 3.07 ERA) at Wrigley this afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CDT. Rusin is 0-3 at Wrigley Field on the season, and thus, will be seeking his first ‘W’ at the Friendly Confines in 2013.
