Wrap Up: Chicago Cubs vs. Miami Marlins (18/04/12)

The Cubs are only on pace to lose 121 games this year….

Could be worse right?

Even for an optimist, its still not looking too good.

I wont cut corners here: that performance was uglier than the Marlins’ jerseys. So ill be keeping this short and sweet.

The Good:

  • Marlon Byrd got a hit. A REAL hit… not reaching the bags on an error or anything! Nicely done. He continues to play well defensively, which is always a plus.
  • Jeff Baker had a 2 hit day bringing his average up to an OK .235. Still lots of work to be done, but he at least got a few cracks of Mark Buehrle, who was dominant on the mound againt the Cubs

The Bad:

  • Matt Garza gave up six earned runs on seven hits with three walks in only five innings of work. For our more casual baseball fans out there, it means he stunk worse than a skunk in a trash can full of week old horseradish. It was far from fun to watch.

The Ugly

  • RISP continues to be an issue for the Cubs, who left 5 runners in scoring position out to dry. Its VERY difficult to win games if you cant score enough runs! However today, I don’t think it would have mattered considering the plentiful offence the Marlins produced.
  • Geovany Soto is still only batting .125 on the year. This speaks for itself.
  • I’m still analyzing the replay of the game and the official box score but quite frankly, I cant come up with enough ways to say how bad it was. It was just…. painful… so I’ll stop here before I start weeping like an infant.

Credit earned where credit is due: the Marlins aren’t a bad baseball team and should be in the mix come post season time. However, the Cubs need to step up because a performance like that wouldn’t even beat the Astros.
