Updating a story that was reported on earlier today, the Chicago Cubs did indeed place starting catcher Geovany Soto on the disabled list. Wellington Castillo has been recalled from triple A-Iowa to take place of Soto, who will be sidelined for the next two weeks with a strain in his left groin.
Through 31 games this season, Soto is hitting .226/.322/.387 with 3 home runs and 12 runs batted in. Hopefully Soto can recover quickly from this injury, as a groin strain typically tends to linger around with a player. This is an important season for Soto, as the Cubs may still not be sure whether or not he is the long term solution at the catcher position.
Wellington Castillo could very well be the catcher of the future for the Cubs. For the next two weeks, we may get a brief sample size of what we can expect from Castillo going forward. Through 49 at-bats with the Iowa Cubs this season, Castillo is hitting .245/.315/.408 with 2 home runs.
Castillo will likely make his first start this season on Thursday.
