The search for Pat Hughes’ new radio partner is now over. The Chicago Cubs and WGN announced today that they have signed former Cub right fielder Keith Moreland to a three year, broadcasting deal. The Cubs really could not have gone wrong with Moreland, or Dave Otto – who was considered to be the other finalist for the job.
"“That’s the only thing I can be, just be me,” he said. “Nobody can replace Ron Santo. He’s irreplaceable. All I can do is keep the seat warm and do the best I can to be me. I have a great advantage in that in that I have a Hall of Fame broadcaster, no question, in Pat Hughes. That makes things a lot easier. If you go to work at Wrigley, I’ve done it. I know that it is an unbelievable opportunity to go to work.” Daily Herald"
Moreland has filled in on occasion for Cubs broadcasts in recent seasons, and has done a commendable job. I know I am not the only that enjoyed Moreland providing a fresh analysis and baseball intellect during games. Considering all the realistic candidates, Moreland may have been the best candidate out there. While Dave Otto has worked on the Cubs broadcasts in prior season, Moreland seemed to develop a good rapport with Pat Hughes.
It certainly will be different, but tune into WGN Radio on February 27, when the Cubs open their Cactus League schedule against the Oakland Athletics.
