Here at Cubbies Crib we would like to everyone a Happy New Year. I have been writing for Cubbies Cribs for just about all of 2010, and feel that over that time we have made great strides to becoming one of the most informative Chicago Cubs blog on the internet. While we enjoyed a prosperous 2010, it was anything but prosperous for the Chicago Cubs.
For whatever reason, nothing in 2010 seemed to go right for the Chicago Cubs. On opening day, the Cubs were trounced 16-5 by the Atlanta Braves which set the tone for the 2010 season. But looking back at the season, there is no one person that you can put the blame on. Because the Chicago Cubs failed as a team collectively. The struggles of Derrek Lee, and Aramis Ramirez plagued the Cubs offense. The self-implosion of Carlos Zambrano left the Cubs without an ace on their starting rotation.
This past season also seemed like it was a “retirement tour” for Lou Piniella, instead of Piniella actually managing the Chicago Cubs. Countless times this season we heard Piniella say that he had no idea what to do. While Piniella did cite family reasons- his ailing mother- for leaving the Chicago Cubs in August, I personally believe that he quit on the Cubs.
As we enter 2011, the Chicago Cubs are led by new manager Mike Quade. Unlike the managers before him, Quade is not going to be given a team with veterans that are expected to contend for a postseason spot. Instead Quade will be given a team that will largely consist of young prospects whose only goal will be to improve for the future. While that may not be the popular idea for Cubs fans, it still gives the fans reason to be happy in 2011.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
