This past week has been fueled by rumors that suggested the Los Angeles Angels were in talks with the Cubs about acquiring Derrek Lee, to replace the injured Kendry Morales in their lineup. However, it appears that those rumors were false and the Cubs and Angels never had any discussions regarding Derrek Lee or Xavier Nady.
Derrek Lee, who has a full-no trade clause, had this to say about the rumors involving him…
"”It happens with every team when you’re not playing well,” said Lee, who is in the final year of a contract that pays $13 million this season. ”Trade rumors pop up. If we turn around and play well, you won’t hear them. That’s just part of the business.” CHICAGO SUN TIMES"
In regards to possibly being open to being traded in the near future, Lee stated he would like to remain a Cub…
"“Who are the ‘excellent sources?'” Lee asked. “I’ve heard nothing on it. I’ve got nothing for you.”Lee said he was not bothered by the speculation. When asked if he wanted to stay with the Cubs, he said yes. CHICAGO TRIBUNE"
It is still not fully clear on whether or not the Cubs are going to be buyers or sellers for this years trading season. If they continue to play the way that they currently are, it is likely that they will become sellers and look to move some veteran pieces in order to get younger for the future.
If the Cubs do become sellers it is likely that we may see the likes of Carlos Zambrano, Aramis Ramirez, Ted Lilly, Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Marshall, and Jeff Baker all become available through trade.
