Cubs Quick Hits- Colvin, Frasor, and the Rotation
Baseball season is a little under two weeks away, and for the most part the Cubs have their 25 man roster pretty much filled out. So, Let’s take a look at the latest happenings in Arizona as the Cubs begin to wrap up Cactus League Play.
- Reports from all over the web are suggesting that Tyler Colvin has beaten out Sam Fuld for the fifth outfielders spot on the Cubs roster. Colvin benefited from a good spring performance, and a lack thereof from Micah Hoffpauir and Brad Snyder. Here is what Lou Piniella had to say about Colvin.
“First, Colvin has had an outstanding spring,” Piniella said. “He has played well enough to make this team. The concern is we don’t want this young man to make this team and just sit. So if he’s on our Opening Day roster, he’s going to get some playing time. He’s not just going to sit.” CHICAGO TRIBUNE
I think this might mean that for the time being, we may see Colvin get more starts over Nady in right field, while he is rehabbing his throwing arm the first few months of the season. Because, other than that, how else would you be able to get Colvin playing time? He is likely going to see a lot of time as a pinch runner, and defensive replacement as well.
- Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports suggested that a potential Jason Frasor to the Cubs deal would be very logical for both teams to make. Mentioning that Frasor gives the Cubs insurance for Carlos Marmol as the closer, as well as a very good set-up man. However, a report from the Tribune tonight said that the Cubs are not close to acquiring any reliever as of right now.
- The Cubs rotation appears to be filled out for opening day. After a month long competition between Tom Gorzelanny, Carlos Silva, Sean Marshall, and Jeff Samardzija it appears that Gorzelanny, and Silva will be named to the rotation. Whereas Marshall, and Samardzija will be named to the bullpen. Lou Piniella is expected to officially announce his rotation on Friday.
